Gemstones have been in use for various purposes for Time unknown. It has been thousands of years since Mankind has found gemstones in the crust of the mother earth. Most Gemstones are formed naturally as Minerals on the earth. There are more than 4000 naturally occurring minerals having characteristic chemical compositions found on the earth, however, only a few such items are considered Gemstones. Only fewer than 100 are used as Gemstones and only 16 of such have achieved importance. In addition to their use as Jewelry, gems were regarded by many civilizations as miraculous and endowed with mysterious powers. Gems are valued for their color, luster, transparency, durability, and high value-to-volume ratio. Gemstones’ prices are dependent on the 4C rule. Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat weight predominantly give us an understanding of the price of the Gemstones. However, there is no standard measure or Retail Price set for Gemstones except for Diamond.
There are various kinds of Gemstones, for example, there are Beryls, Chrysoberyl, Corundum etc. Each of these forms a gemstone when they are in contact with certain minerals in the crust of the earth. For instance, Beryl when in contact with Aluminium silicate form Emerald which has a chemical content of Beryllium aluminum silicate. Similarly, corundum forms Sapphires.
When we consider Gemstones, depending on the usage of gemstones there are further subcategories of Gemstones. If you are using it for Jewellery purposes the prices of Gemstones are not very expensive, however, if you are using it for astrological purposes the prices are very high! Have we wondered why? Why is the gemstone price different for both purposes? Let me explain. If we are using a gemstone for an Ornament, our focus on priority is only the color of the gemstone and the lustre of the gemstone. So we usually do not attention to the kind of treatments the gemstone has undergone. Such artificially treated or heated gemstones are good to be used only for Jewellery purposes. It would not carry the importance or the chemical properties to be considered as a Jyotishya Gemstone.
So what is a Jyotisha gemstone? Any gemstone which is mined from the earth and which has been cut into shape and given to the customer without subjecting to any kind of artificial treatment or heat procedure is called a Jyotishya Gemstone. Such gemstones are quite expensive. Just to give a comparison of pricing between the two categories, A ruby used to make a Bangle can be obtained at 20 rs per carat to 2000 rs a Carat. However, if you want a ruby for astrological purposes it may cost you anywhere between 25000 rupees to a few lakhs per carat.
